All over the place

I will be so happy when this new place adds subscriptions and alerts of friends’ posts, etc.

Patience. In due time. As WelshPixie says, they are big projects, and with any big project it’s better to be methodical to make sure it’s done right. That’s my usual approach, too.

Actually, that’s all right, because I think I’m dealing with a bit of writer’s block right now. Not that I am unable to write–obviously that’s not true–but I’m just not satisfied with what is appearing on the monitor. It seems my more creative thinking nowadays is in inverse relationship to my proximity to a keyboard. I don’t know. Maybe I’m being too hard on myself. Maybe I should just sit there, put on some music and let it loose.

Well, I can tell you about an experience I had today that I haven’t had in, oh, five years.

I had an eye exam.

It all started because the local optometrist asked me to come over a few weeks ago to do an article about a new piece of equipment he’s got that does a better job of detecting the warning signs of glaucoma. So I did that and got a picture and wrote the article. And while I was there, I decided … what the heck? I scheduled the exam.

I know, I know … five years is a long time. Next time, said the doctor, make it two years. What can I say? Sometimes I have more money than other times.

That was this morning. He said he liked my article. I told him how my vision seems to be changing–its’ getting harder to adjust from really bright conditions (sun on snow; oncoming bright headlights) to darker conditions (the office; the road at night). That’s part of getting older, said the doctor. Both my eyes and the darkening function of the lenses–they don’t darken as well over time, either, taking longer to adjust.

On to the exam itself. He discovered my prescription for near vision has to be strengthened … and the prescription for distance vision needs to be weakened. The frame selection was brief–the new frames are nearly the same as my old ones (light brown) with more rectangular lenses. The current ones are more rounded at the bottom. The new glasses should get here in a week to 10 days. Or thereabouts.

A tiring day

Gosh, I am really tired tonight. But I come by it honestly.

I went out of town this afternoon for a track meet–an indoor meet, at a high school in Wisconsin that has a huge fieldhouse. It’s a new school, about an hour away, and the place is beautiful. They built a big school and didn’t skimp. I stuck my head inside the auditorium–huge and very well furnished. All the schools up here–I can’t think of an exception–seem very spartan in comparison.

Anyway, the meet was supposed to start about 4, but 5 p.m. came and went, and everyone was still milling around, waiting for something to happen. It finally started around 5:15 and progressed very slowly. Lots of races, delays, this and that. I stayed there until about 8:30; they still had several events to run, and it seemed likely that the event would continue to 10 p.m. and maybe later. On a school night, mind you.

So with all the delays, I was on my feet from about 4 until just before I left. The first meet of the year, and my legs were getting tired and stiff. I stopped at a Subway for a long-delayed supper and then drove home. Surprise! We’re getting a little snow tonight. Not a lot, but the road was white in places on the way back.

Bottom line: It’s been a long day, and on top of that I’m supposed to have an eye exam tomorrow at 8 a.m. So I’m feeling really tired now. I’m yawning. I stayed up late night. Won’t do that tonight.

I’ve been working on a couple posts this week, but I’m not satisfied with them yet. I’ll try to have something done tomorrow night, maybe. But there really hasn’t been a lot of time. I’ve been putting off a lot of work at home until basketball was over, and there is no shortage of things that need my time and attention now. On Wednesday night, I started working on taxes for a couple hours. I got David’s finished–he’s getting a nice refund. Don’t think we are, but I haven’t really gotten that far yet.

That’s enough for tonight. Gotta write a fast letter, and then off to bed I go.

Gang aft agley

Oh, I had such big plans for the weekend! I was really going to work on getting my new efx3.com site set up nicely, pick a new theme, write some really interesting posts and so on. But then things happened.

My Saturday turned out to be way too busy for creative stuff. Not that I did very much. I worked all morning at the office. Then I went home for lunch, and my wife suggested that we take a nap. But a nap was not exactly what she had in mind. Not at first. And actually, that’s what I also had in mind. So two minds met and joined … and then we really did take a nap after that. Slept well.

After we got up, I thought we’d have a quiet dinner at home and then maybe I could watch some hockey or else we’d agree on a movie. But she had other ideas. A while ago, we agreed that we would hold a special Victory Over Basketball dinner, to celebrate that I had covered my last basketball game of the season and will be able to spend a lot more time at home now. We don’t go out for steak that often, but we agreed this was a special occasion worth celebrating. The question: When would we do it?

She decided this would be the perfect night for it, so we went to a supper club located just a few blocks away. It was the first time we had gotten steaks there, but they did a really good job. I opted for a tenderloin with a baked potato on the side. Yumm! That was good eating. The only problem was that the gift certificate I had gotten about two years ago expired at the end of 2008. Well, it was a nice, tasty meal anyway.

After that, I thought I would go upstairs and do some writing, occasionally glancing over to the hockey game on TV nearby. But that didn’t happen because of my friend, B.

B (who lives in Alaska) and I recently decided to set up a DVD exchange program. Sort of like Netflix, only without the subscription, fees, inventory and annoying popup ads on your computer screen. I recently mailed her some films, and her package with a few films arrived in Saturday morning’s mail. We looked them over and decided to try “Definitely Maybe.” Once it was over, my wife was getting sleepy, so I took her up to bed and finally got to sit at the computer keyboard, fully intending to write something. But I quickly realized I was tired, too, and couldn’t focus my mind. I gave up within 10 minutes and went to bed.

Better luck on Sunday? I worked at the office in the morning, then went home. But David was there, too, and he brought along the movie “Wall-E.” He had gone to Iron Mountain with us on Friday and said he might come over. He did. So we watched “Wall-E.” Or tried to. My wife conked out halfway through and soon was “purring.”

When the movie ended, he went upstairs, and I started using the text editor on the Efx3 dashboard. I had been using it (instead of Google Docs) since the site started. But I bet you can guess the rest: I hit a wrong combination of keys and wiped out all my changes since last saving it. Lesson learned–I’m back to using Google Docs, because of its automatic backups.

****

Two big changes to report. First, as you have seen already, I switched to a very different theme. Actually, I was looking themes over this evening, and I hit a wrong key (which I seem to be doing a lot lately), and the new theme took effect. Actually, though, I like the way it came out. Plus, that picture at the top can be changed. How long do you think it will be before you see Charlie looking out at you?

Finally, it got a lot warmer here–the 40s, anyway, which is pretty darn warm for this area in March–and nearly all the snow is gone. The back yard only has brown grass, aside from a few leftover piles of snow where the plow dumped it. Those are disappearing, also, and this week we are forecast to get rain, not snow.

I’m sure we are still destined for one last major snowstorm, but the ground has warmed up a bit now, the frost is coming out of the ground, so any new snow won’t stay around for long. Given how long and how cold this winter has been, it’s only fair. Bring on summer!

Time of transitions

Tuesday was a day of transition. No question about that.

That’s the day I wrote my final post at efx2blogs.com. I wrote that it’s been fun, but it’s now time to move on. Better get out of the house before they tear it down. (Ironically, the guy who had been running the place showed up today. Bet he was surprised at what has happened.)

On Monday, the team I cover lost its regional semifinal game. I could tell you more about it–it was quite an exceptional game–but the reason I mention it is because it was the last basketball game I had to cover this winter. Now their season is over, and so is the hardest part of the year at work.

Then, there’s the weather. Winter has checked out–it may make a brief return, but several days in the 40s and 50s have melted nearly all the snow around here. The big piles of plowed-up snow look pretty puny now, and all the ice in the alley has melted. It will get colder later this week, but I think we can say winter is nearly over now. Time for the earth to warm up. Monday, on my drive, the car thermometer read 62 degrees F at one point. A nice day for a drive, and 12 hours of daylight.

It’s going to be colder Thursday, but not by much. Things are definitely going in the right direction. Transition time–I can take it.

I was feeling very tired (and discouraged) late this winter. All the scads of basketball. Efx2’s uncertain future. But that’s over, and I’m much happier now. Once again, I can do things that I want to do. Last Saturday, my wife and I took a trip out of town, mainly to travel some different roads and to get her to some quilt shops–first time we’ve been able to do that since last summer.

A line from a favorite Beatles’ song says it well: “Here comes the sun. Here comes the sun. And I say, it’s all right.”

The best Friday the 13th

I got some very good news late Friday night … when I discovered the brand-spankin’-new www.efx3.com website.

Why do I feel that way?

Because, until this happened, it seemed like the efx community was dying. Keith had gone who-knows-where, and he didn’t leave anybody with the full set of keys. Nobody seemed to know what to do, and we all remembered some lengthy efx2 outages. With the pending domain renewal deadline approaching,  my nightmare was that the site would simply expire — in more ways than one.

It didn’t happen because a team of hard workers were just as alarmed as I was … and they had the skills and the initiative to put together a new site. I’m so grateful to Welsh Pixie and the others who got it done. Best of all, with several admins in charge of the operation, it means www.efx3.com won’t be totally dependent on one person and his/her interest/time. Also, full backups. Read the details on WelshPixie’s post at efx2blogs.

Yeah, backups of our posts at efx2blogs are up to us, but they did post info on how to at least copy them to our computers. If only they could be moved over to the new place … but under the circumstances it seems like a minor point.

The important thing is that we still have a place to go where we can write about our lives and the things that concern us … and keep track of the online friends we have gotten to know and love over the last few years.

That makes it, in my opinion, the best Friday the 13th ever.

Hey, we got lucky.

Hi, peeps!

And hello to you, too.  I first spotted the link to efx3 when I got home from a quick run out of town (to visit my mom), and things look pretty good so far. Haven’t had time to choose a new theme, but give me a little time. Right now, I’m just rushing out a first post that isn’t generic.

It’s looking good. I’m grateful to WelshPixie and everyone else involved in finding us a new home where we can write and keep track with our online friends.

Much more work to do, of course. But so far, so good. I really feel good about it.

Next priority: Finding a new theme.
